“INCEPTION” and Cities

This is the FAMIMA that they show in the movie. It’s fun to see your city in a movie.
So Inception was the best movie I have seen in a long time. Seriously, harnessing the power of your dreams? That’s awesome. And the DiCaprio + Watanabe combo? Nice. Now an urban planning point of view… (a naïve one from a young student, duh)… probably don’t read it if you haven’t seen the movie (you’re crazy if you haven’t seen it, btw).
“The Architect” on the dream-stealing team is the one who designs the buildings and cities, and this creation is filled with the “projections” of everyone else.
Wow, this is like urban planning isn’t it. Urban planners try to form an urban area, and leave the rest up to the people using this space. Like the movie, you have to create a good space that’s usable and familiar – too much drastic change and there will automatically be resistance just like in the movie. Change comes slowly, incrementally. I think that’s the essence of politics, urban planning, etc.
Once in a while, a big change can occur though – just not all the time. Change too much and The Architect literally dies because the projections attack – attempt to change too much and the idea either gets killed by the public or political process. Crazy – does our mind work like the reality of urban planning?
I would seriously give a finger or two to go into the Inception world and create my own city.
Oh, and when the DiCaprio+Cottilard couple were in limbo I also thought it was interesting that the ideal city they created was high-density, grid-format with public space in the middle. Grand Manner style? I think… haha. And DiCaprio mentions how the couple wanted to live in a large city, but have a home that is suburbian single-family – because they created the world, they could do that, he says.
I’m not sure if this is popular thinking, but that would be amazing to live in a world that combines both urban city life and suburban life – without compromise. Impossible, but nonetheless a nice concept. I guess in reality, we have to balance the two.
BEE-TEE-DUBS they show Downtown Los Angeles in the movie – Famima and Spring Street. And the AON Building… I wanna go watch the movie again, this time in IMAX theaters.
